The Iowa SAKI project utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach. Collaboration between law enforcement, sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE), prosecution, advocacy, and other community partners is essential in ensuring a victim-centered, trauma informed approach to sexual assault response and follow up. Each discipline offers unique experiences and perspectives that, when shared, can lead to a comprehensive understanding of the important responsibilities that each profession has. Having a complete understanding of the roles and responsibilities of each discipline can provide a foundation for a unified response, which can provide a more supportive environment for victims who disclose. Law enforcement, prosecutors, advocates, and SANEs who routinely respond together may benefit from getting to know one another, understanding the roles (doc) of the other disciplines involved in sexual assault response, and beginning to collaborate, if they have not done so already.
